If one premise for architecture has been to ground space to a place, then what value does site specificity hold in these contemporary times of easy-jet travel and superfluid mobility? Has the anonymity of the generic globalised city yielded extra value for localised cultures? WHAT ARCHITECTURE is an architectural office whose design strategies are guided by the cultural, social and economic reverberation between the global and the local - the glocal. The city today is characterised by an immense instability caused by flow: the transcience of its tourist-citizen demographic, the rapid exchange of information and goods, the sensitising resonance between foreign phenomena and that familiar. Within its projects, WHAT ARCHITECTURE looks to anticipate the unexpected. Research and theoretical practices are conducted via the spaces of teaching and publication. Teaching has been conducted at the Bartlett, London, TU, Delft and Sint Lucas, Brussels. WHAT ARCHITECTURE is continuously exposed to the contemporary condition due to its european correspondency to Monument Magazine (Australia) and via the 'spatial mobility' book ROAM. WHAT ARCHITECTURE works with disciplines that inform architecture such as the arts, film, sound and economics. WHAT ARCHITECTURE thus collaborates with facilitating organisations such as Ove Arup, ING Bank, Mecanoo, Black Dog Publishing, 0900-space, and MAP (NZ). In this way the WHAT-Network has emerged that is capable of outsourcing project information from a variety of places. WHAT ARCHITECTURE has exhibited at the Venice Biennale and are involved in 'ab1' - architecture biennale 1, Rotterdam 2003.
WHO is WHAT?
WHAT ARCHITECTURE was established in 2000 and operates from London. WHAT ARCHITECTURE
consists of two partners: Anthony Hoete and Gerrit Grigoleit. The partners of
WHAT ARCHITECTURE have built up a broad professional experience through working
for various architectural firms in a number of 'international locales' including
Mecanoo (Delft, where one of the partners was an Associate), Sauerbruch Hutton
(Berlin) and Daniel Libeskind (Berlin). WHAT ARCHITECTURE was formed so as to
turn this diversity of experience into projects imbued with rigour and vigour!
